Marlborough Graphics is delighted to present an online exhibition of prints by prominent Abstract Expressionists Adolph Gottlieb and Robert Motherwell.
Both descendants of surrealism, and inspired
by archaic art and primitive expression, Gottleib and Motherwell each developed
their own visual languages with a shared emphasis on directness of expression.
Each found a harmony within a coalescence of immediate, energetic gestures
contrasted against meditative, cerebral, and emotional fields of color. The
profound breakthroughs by Gottlieb, Motherwell, and other American Abstract
expressionists effectively redirected the postwar artworld’s focus from Europe
(specifically Paris) to New York, shifting the landscape of abstraction for
generations to come.
